Kerala Sex Ratio Widens. More Muslim Women, Almost No Christian Men.

As mentioned in our earlier story, Sikh Population in Kerala up 34%. Christians 1%, Muslims 12%, Hindus 2%, we have been analysing Census 2011 data with Census 2001 data for Kerala. Our workbook for calculations is public and you can find it here.

Overall the Sex Ratio in Kerala has widened, more women than men. While the number of men increased by 558,798, number of women in the state increased by 1,005,889. Population of men grew at 3.61%, women grew faster at 6.14%. The gap between women and men in 2001 was 904,146, in the 2011 Census this has climbed to 1,351,237. That’s in increase of 49.45%.

The number of Muslim women grew in Kerala, this is more than any other community. Between the 2001 and 2011 census, there is an increase of 609,746, a 14.92% increase. Muslim men grew relatively slower at 10.59%, adding 399,884.

Christian men numbers seem to be stuck. In a ten year period, there has been only addition of 11,991 men. that’s in increase of 0.4%. Christian women did better, growing by 2.34%, 71,851 in numbers. Number of Hindu men also grew by only 1.3%.

The grew widest amongst Muslims, by 209,862 or 67.46%. Christians at 63.78% and Hindus at 34.44%. What we need to keep in mind is that this does not mean more girl children are being born alone, these numbers could also be due to men in particular communities migrating or dying earlier.
