CPI(M)-RSS violence: National media, BJP painting a ‘distorted picture’

While discourses on various national media regarding the ‘murder politics’ in the State continue, Kerala sees Union Defence Minister Arun Jaitley’s landmark visit to Kerala in the eyes of suspicion. Even though the Union Ministry and the Central BJP sources have repeatedly denied any political intentions behind the visit, political analysts and the general public anticipates the possibility of imposing President’s rule in the State in the backdrop of the violence.

Various news channels in Kerala had discussed about the CPI(M)-RSS violence. ‘Manorama News’ in its programme ‘Parayathae Vayiya’, hosted by prominent journalist Shani Prabhakaran, hinted at the agenda of Sangh Parivar to establish President’s Rule in Kerala.

The national media has been discussing the issue of political violence in the State ever since the RSS and CPI(M) workers began attacking each others’ residences a fortnight ago. Rajesh, who is said to be an RSS worker in Thiruvanathapuram, had lost his life in a rift last week and leaders from both parties had met to seek options to put an end to the violence.

Hub of political unrest

The national media in some recent debates and discussions have found out that Kerala has been the ‘hub of political unrest’ and consequent murders in the past decades after Independence. While in the past several decades, it was north Kerala which was home for such murders, the recent happenings have signaled that the political unrest and killings have found its bastion in the central and South Kerala districts as well.

Earlier in the day, Arun Jaitley visited relatives of the slain RSS activist Rajesh at his residence in Thiruvananthapuram. He will also visit Jayaprakash, another RSS worker, currently under treatment following a suspected political attack by CPI(M) functionaries.

‘Taliban’ atmosphere

BJP leaders including MPs have raised allegations and even compared Kerala’s political atmosphere to that of Taliban. Meenakshi Lekhi, a BJP MP from New Delhi, has stated in a sarcastic tone in the Parliament that Kerala was nothing but the ‘Godforsaken country’.

It is observed by political analysts in the State that BJP’s consistent failures in winning electoral politics in Kerala could be why BJP leaders are raising false allegations against the State’s political ambiance. It was only in the last Assembly election, the BJP could send one of its senior leaders to the State Assembly. Besides, it is also observed that the Pinarayi-led LDF Government’s popularity has also caused dismay in BJP circles.

Opponents of BJP in Kerala has alleged that it was nothing but dubious intentions of destabilising the State’s political and social life, behind the BJP leaders’ consistent remarks on CPI(M)’s murder politics. BJP leaders in the State has alleged that after the Pinarayi-led LDF Government came into power in last May, a great number of BJP workers lost their lives in political violence. The opponents have argued that equal or more number of people from the opposite political parties, especially those associated with the ruling political front, have also lost lives in politically-motivated attacks. It is also alleged that it was a section of BJP who perpetrated violence in Thiruvanathapuram with vested interests and Rajesh was attacked and killed by his own party men.

It should also be recollected at this juncture that a BJP MP from North India had offered a huge amount of money as prize for those who chop Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan’s head. Those who oppose the Sangh Parivar’s politics in the State have said that the BJP had no right to say a single word about the political murders in the State. According to them, this is because the BJP keeps mum to man killing another in the name of animals in the North Indian states, referring to the recent attacks against people suspecting and alleging beef eating.

Meanwhile, the BJP leaders from the State had sought Central intervention in the wake of political violence in Thiruvanathapuram. CPI(M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and BJP state president Kummanam Rajashekharan had engaged in a peace talk in Kannur last day.
