Restaurant Review: Here’s What You Should Eat at Down Town Café

Well-brewed coffee, something hot to snack on, and the company of good friends or a thrilling book in hand is all what one desires on a cozy rainy day. Make it all come true with the café next door – Down Town.

Down Town, the brainchild of a 24-year-old, located near Calicut beach, was one of the first few coffee shops in Calicut. This American-themed cafe serves everything that a young stomach craves!

From fine sandwiches to baked goodies and milkshakes, there is so much to taste at this café.

The killer shakes, also known as the freak shakes, have been ruling Pinterest and Instagram for quite some time now. These shakes are the first-of-its-kind available in the city. The choices can be made from white chocolate, Nutella and strawberry. Served in trendy mason jars, with a generous dollop of Nutella, these milkshakes are a dream come true. It’s a drool-worthy marriage of Nutella, chocolate fudge brownies and nutties. Meanwhile, the White Chocolate Killer Shake is the seventh heaven for those with a sweet tooth, standing tall, fair, and beautiful. With every sip, one can taste the white chocolate perfectly blended with Raffello and caramel. Crowned with whipped cream and brownies and garnished with Oreos, Gems, Kit Kat & Raffello, this drink can be easily shared by two people on a nice summer’s eve.

What makes Down Town special is its unique array of juicy sandwiches, wraps & burgers. Be it the lean steak sliced sandwich or the DT club sandwich, each one has a consistent taste.

DT1 is one crowded café with a higher noise level compared to the one on the bypass. With the all new menu available at DT2 bypass, Calicut, food has been taken to the next level. There is a variety of bakes, from prawns to mac and chicken. The Kheema Fries is a simple yet luscious dish, consisting of crisp fries at the bottom, flavorful kheema in the middle, topped with white sauce and cilantro.
The baked brioche bun looks like a homespun masterpiece.  It is as fluffy as a pillow, toasty brown, and made divine with corn and chicken in white sauce and herbs. Make sure to eat it hot.

Next in row is a finger-licking dish. The Coco Basa. This is a must try for all, not just fish lovers. Basa that is lightly grilled, smeared with crushed garlic, lemon and butter, is served with roasted veggies, pesto sauce, and garlic bread. A combination we would definitely want to go back for. We also tried the crunchy basa, which tasted quite ordinary.

To whet your appetite, there is a steaming barbecue pizza, topped with bell pepper, olives, chicken cubes and an enormous amount of cheese.

Three projects in the pipeline, one opening this month and three running, all in a short span of two-and-a-half years, is a highly commendable success story that is worth sharing.  The constant growth in taste, innovation and presentation skills clearly depicts the hard work and effort put into each dish. The ever-pleasant smile of the staff there will make you give them five extra brownie points.
